From Good to Great: 9 Tips for Motivating Your Band
Waymire, Mark D.; Snead, Todd E.
Teaching Music, v15 n1 p28 Aug 2007
While being part of a good band program has positive benefits, participating in a great program often provides even more benefits. The reputation of a great program is usually far-reaching, attracting, statewide, and possibly national attention. Additional monies, more alumni support, special performance opportunities (all-state, Midwest, etc.), higher repertoire levels, additional attention given to students for university scholarships, and so forth, are examples of benefits of a great band program. The first step of this journey toward greatness begins with the director's and students' motivation to take the program to the next level. The authors' experience working with outstanding public school bands, drum corps, and professional performance ensembles has taught them many valuable lessons about motivating students. Each type of organization deals with adversity and challenges in different ways and at different levels. Nevertheless, they have found similar strategies among these diverse ensembles. In this article, the authors provide nine "tricks of the trade" to help motivate band students to go from good to great. (Contains 7 resources.)
