Teaming Was a Catalyst for Better Climate and Improved Achievement

There are those in the school community who believe that the anxious feelings and heightened sense of anxiety experienced by sixth graders as they transition from elementary to junior high school constitute a rite of passage. Teachers and school administrators in the Indiana Area Junior High School in Pennsylvania believed differently. During the 2002-2003 school year, school administrators and a core group of seventh grade teachers began to have discussions centered on student achievement and the junior high school environment. From those discussions, it was determined that the junior high school environment needed to be changed in a way that was more "school friendly" and "student focused" for their incoming seventh grade students. This article discusses teaming as a viable way to improve the school climate for seventh grade students. (Contains 5 notes.)
