Year 7 Numeracy Starters
Collison, Kate
Mathematics Teaching, n185 p26-27 Dec 2003
While attending a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course, this author was provided with the time and encouragement to try out different activities, styles, and strategies of teaching. She used this time to develop numeracy starter lessons with Y7 students, spending two weeks with each of four sets of students. She decided from the outset to use the same starters with all four sets, varying the level and pace according to their abilities. This exercise made the author aware of the different mental methods and approaches that different pupils have when dealing with the same problem. Some pupils have a methodical, investigative approach, looking for patterns and relationships, thinking ahead all the time, and adapting their method depending on results. Others expect to be led through the problems, one step at a time, not being able to see the full picture, form a strategy, or see a solution evolving at the end of a series of operations.
