Differing Sexualities in Singular Classrooms
Graziano, Kevin J.
Multicultural Education, v11 n2 p2-9 Win 2003
The first half of this article reviews literature on some of the unmet needs of gay and lesbian students in schools and highlights educators' attitudes and beliefs toward individuals with differing sexual identities. Although the majority of literature reviewed in this article does not portray educators as being supportive of gay and lesbian needs, the author does not dismiss those teachers, educators, administrators, Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) groups, and allies across the country who educate others about indifferences and support the needs of gays and lesbian students. An analysis of his own school experiences, silently walking through crowded hallways as a young gay male, is provided in the second half of this article. His experiences are discussed under the theoretical underpinning of Martin Covington's self-worth theory. A brief description of Covington's theory is provided. This article concludes with a description of an exclusion activity aimed at assisting educators with understanding behaviors of belonging to majority and minority groups.
