Re-Reading Cecilia: Education and the Teacher
Vaillant, Denise
Prospects: Quarterly Review of Comparative Education, v35 n4 p439-448 Dec 2005
In this article, the author pays tribute to Cecilia Braslavsky by reviewing writings, interviews, and articles authored exclusively by her. Cecilia was a source of inexhaustible inspiration, not only because of her ideas and writings, but because of the force of her convictions and passion with which she tackled the work of researching, teaching, and managing. Cecilia accepted risks and earned criticisms, but at the same time she gained a privileged place for herself in the intellectual world. As well as being a teacher and researcher, Cecilia contributed her national and international experience as a manager. From that position she reflected on and asked questions about the teaching issue that is so closely linked to the school crisis. This situation cannot be separated, as she fully recognised, from the dual crisis, both short-term and structural, in which education systems are immersed. Among many other things, Cecilia sought acutely and audaciously to reinvent the teaching profession and to design training programmes to provide the qualities required of a teacher in the twenty-first century. She addressed this issue by analysing the competencies this new teacher should have to be able to successfully lead the delicate and complex teaching/learning process, reviewing the role of State, universities, school, and society itself.
