Community Schools and Relay Schools in the Savannah Region of Togo

In Togo the education system suffers from structural inefficiency and a lack of motivation on the part of teachers. Owing to unsuitable teaching methods, overloaded curricula, the obsolete nature of the system and the ineffectiveness of training, Togo's school system has remained practically at a standstill despite the educational reform of 1975 and the reorganization of the sector after 1991. Education problems and socio-economic difficulties are particularly acute in the Savannah region. In this article, the authors discuss two projects under the titles of "Community Schools" and "Relay Schools in the Savannah Region" that were launched in April 1986 in order to alleviate the problems. The community schools project is part of a policy of innovation that aims to ensure access to basic education for all, while the objective of the relay schools project, which is intended to be complementary to the community schools project, is to provide an alternative solution for children in the 8-13 age group.
