Student Evaluation Standards: A Paradigm Shift for the Evaluation of Students
Gullickson, Arlen R.
Prospects: Quarterly Review of Comparative Education, v35 n2 p213-227 Jun 2005
"The Student Evaluation Standards" were born from the frustrations and concerns of many people who want the evaluations to better serve student learning. This paper describes those standards and how they serve student learning. The first part of this paper lays groundwork--context--by providing strong evidence that, at least in the United States of America (USA), the need for change in student evaluation practices is urgent. The second part outlines the work of the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation (JCSEE) to create these standards. The third briefly describes "The Student Evaluation Standards." The fourth provides a sample student evaluation situation to show how these new standards can be used to analyze problems and lead to needed changes. The concluding fifth part solicits from the reader a commitment to work with the JCSEE to use the "Student Evaluation Standards" as a tool to make fundamental changes to strengthen and improve the foundation upon which student evaluation is based and upon which student learning is so dependent.
