Reform of Secondary Education in Morocco: Challenges and Prospects
Diyen, Hayat
Prospects: Quarterly Review of Comparative Education, v34 n2 p211-222 Jun 2004
As people embark on a new globalized world, the old formal system of education in the Arab world is facing challenges and dilemmas. How can the new system preserve their Islamic and Arabic culture, while incorporating strategies for a new globalized world? This article tries to answer some of these questions by focusing on Morocco as a case study. One of the defects of the old system of education in Morocco is its inability to offer choice and flexibility for students to meet the needs of the modern world. Today's job market is full of opportunities, but these opportunities exist principally in the modern employment sector. Secondary education has to adapt to these exigencies. Secondary education reform in Morocco is, however, full of dilemmas and risks. Facing the reform agenda are immense economic, social and cultural problems. In this article, the author discusses the reform of secondary education in Morocco and its challenges and prospects. (Contains 6 tables.)
