International Teaching Assistants and Summative and Formative Student Evaluation
Gorsuch, Greta J.; Sokolowski, Julie A.
Journal of Faculty Development, v21 n2 p117-136 May 2007
International teaching assistants (ITAs) teach undergraduate science courses in American universities in ever growing numbers as they contend with a host of pedagogic, cultural, and language issues in an unfamiliar educational setting. Yet little is known about their experiences and development as new teachers. This study focuses on six ITAs who have been assigned to teach chemistry and physics labs. Three of the ITAs were taught how to make their own formative evaluation questionnaires and then they developed, administered, and analyzed two to three questionnaires per semester for the two semesters of the study. The remaining three ITAs used only standard university summative questionnaires. This study investigates feedback ITAs obtain from formative and summative questionnaires, and the extent to which their responses are specific and action oriented. The results provide insights on how ITAs develop their English skills and teaching skills in classroom settings, but more importantly how formative evaluation can enhance this development through opportunities for awareness building, and teaching strategy formulation and trial.
