Faculty Reading Circles: Creating Possibilities or More Problems?
Stiler, Gary M.
Journal of Faculty Development, v21 n2 p81-92 May 2004
Faculty reading groups explored the potential for creating a discussion series among departmental colleagues at a regional university. The objectives of this initiative were to enhance collegiality and to facilitate communication and consensus-building skills among peers. Two titles were read by participating faculty during sessions spanning two consecutive terms. An assessment survey of participants indicated generally positive perceptions about faculty experiences and offered recommendations regarding potential improvements in book discussion formats. Recommendations include a need for a more inclusive book selection process, management of off-task discussions, and strategies to increase participation among all categories of departmental faculty.
