Teachers are in uniquely powerful positions to positively impact youths who are at risk for school failure. Youths who overcame serious risk factors often report that a teacher, coach, or other adult provided a mentoring relationship that sustained them. Developing classroom management and academic instruction routines that meet the needs of all students is an essential first step. Providing students and parents with information on school-based and community support services is an essential second step for students who are not responding sufficiently to the general classroom. In this article, the author reviews a case study about a student with whom she worked several years ago. It illustrates the power of protective factors in facilitating resilient responses to what might otherwise have been overwhelming odds. She concludes that facilitating resilient responses to the inevitable challenges of students who live with multiple risks requires attention to strengths, preferences, and processes that are not always at a top of a teacher's checklist of contracted duties. These youths force teachers to think beyond traditional methods of assessment and intervention. Their successes should be aligned with teachers' best efforts to support and celebrate who they are.
