Eva & Rick's Incredible Journey
Carner, Eva
Exceptional Parent, v36 n11 p63-66 Nov 2006
In 1982, the author became the foster mom to Rick, a small child who got a pretty rough start to life and an even rougher "pre" start. Rick's birth mother was addicted to alcohol and for most of his time in her womb she drank heavily. The author was a single, special education teacher, and worked with children with developmental disabilities for the Riverside County Office of Education. When Rick came to her at the age of 4, the author had little knowledge of his special needs and what it would mean to his future, and to hers. This article describes the author's experience in raising a child with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, a term commonly used by researchers and experts to describe everyone affected by maternal drinking.
