"Bond of Union"--Cultivating a Writing Community
Michell, Michael
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v80 n2 p92-94 Nov-Dec 2006
Many involved with writing centers--whether faculty-led, specialist-led, student-led, or some other configuration--know the power of having created, or having been part of, a writing community. But a genuine writing community--the kind of community which a significant percentage of students, faculty, and others make use of and benefit from--is not a guaranteed outcome of all writing centers. Yet, the writing center can facilitate a "bond of union," a context in which all stakeholders (administration, and curriculum coordinators, counselors, department chairs, teachers, students, and parents) are clear on its purposes and possibilities, and make use of it in the best possible ways. In this article, the author describes how he created a secondary school writing center at a private American school in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and how a writing community has emerged there. The author relates how, to create the writing center, he first generated awareness of and interest in his plan to help the community become better writers and teachers of writing.
