Teacher Education Accord: Values and Ideals of the Teaching Profession in Canada
Collins, Alice; Tierney, Rob
Education Canada, v46 n4 p73-75 Fall 2006
A new Pan-Canadian accord renews the conversation about teacher education and teacher professionalism. This article discusses a set of Pan-Canadian education initiatives that are outlined by deans of education, through the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE). They arose in response to a common interest in advancing education in Canada in ways consistent with strengths, diversity, needs and, in particular, commitment to ensuring the effectiveness of programs that advance the teaching profession. This joint effort responds to calls for the creation and sharing of data on educational matters, and to commitment to more fully engage education faculties in these efforts. The Accord on Teacher Education is the first of several to be developed. ACDE encourages faculties and schools of education to consider these principles in the development and evaluation of their teacher education programs. The twelve principles advance values and ideals about the teacher as professional, life long learner and social activist; about the power of teaching and learning; about values of respect, inclusion, globalization and diversity; about collaboration with educational and public communities; and about strong content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge.
