Leadership: Part of the Civic Mission of School?
O'Brien, Joseph; Kohlmeier, Jada
Social Studies, v94 n4 p161-166 Jul-Aug 2003
National standards in social studies, history, civics/government, and geography stress the importance of preparing young people to become active citizens, yet pay little attention to civic leadership. Several only imply that one of a citizen's responsibilities is to assume leadership roles at the community, state, and national level. Only one specifically cites preparing students as leaders, though only in the preface. In this article, the authors argue for the importance of studying leaders, present the results of an analysis of student projects on leaders and leadership, and offer a framework for a middle-school unit that grew out of the students' work.
