The Prospects of Education in a Changing World
Demidenko, E. S.
Russian Education and Society, v49 n6 p84-100 Jun 2007
These days there is a great deal of discussion about the necessity of further radical reforms and improvements in education and upbringing, with reference to the fact that education and upbringing are not in keeping with the new social and historical conditions. At the same time, the picture of the globalizing world and the oncoming postindustrial civilization, as portrayed by a number of researchers, contains the Western model of the interpretation of postindustrialism, without taking account of the facts in a reality that is changing in dynamic and contradictory ways. The orientation toward the West can be accounted for by the fact that it is in the West that most developed countries are concentrated, and under the conditions of the globalizing market, education in those countries has become a significant factor in the development of their economies and their public life as a whole. This article discusses steps for the appropriate design of a promising, realistic system of education and upbringing of the rising generation.
