Orphaned Children: An Analysis of Life and Practices in a Residential Institution
Astoiants, M. S.
Russian Education and Society, v49 n4 p23-42 Apr 2007
This article attempts to enter the world of orphaned children by describing how their daily activities are organized in a social rehabilitation center for minor children, called Center N in this article. The article was based on materials of a study that resulted from participant observation between 1995 and 2002, reflecting a few aspects of the children's life and activity. It attempts to answer the following questions using empirical data from participant observation and interviews: (1) What is their life like today?; and (2) What are the everyday practices and behavioral tactics of the children in the institution? Its purpose to discover the everyday experiences that are hidden from superficial view. While the author is an active advocate of the development of family forms of upbringing of orphaned children and, as far as possible, reducing the number of residential child care institutions, she does not deny that in some cases placing a child in such an institution proved to be inevitable and is more humane than leaving him or her in a troubled family.
