Ethnic Mongol Students and Cultural Recognition: Case Studies of Three Chinese Universities
Zhenzhou, Zhao
Chinese Education and Society, v40 n2 p26-37 Mar-Apr 2007
Cultural recognition is of growing interest in China, where ethnic identity has become an increasingly conspicuous issue (Gladney 1994, 1996; Hansen 1999; Harrell 1990, 2001; Lee 2001; Postiglione 1999; Postiglione, Zhu, and Ben 2004; Teng 2001). However, the role of institutions of Chinese higher education has received little attention, despite the fact that the People's Republic of China (PRC) now has more students attending universities than any other country in the world. This paper focuses specifically on ethnic Mongols in Chinese universities, those who will form the backbone of the Mongol intellectual community, and examines the way in which they perceive their culture and how they respond to representations of their culture on campus.
