The Power of Professors
Wilson, Robin
Chronicle of Higher Education, v52 n26 pA10 Mar 2006
Wilson reports on the resignation of Lawrence H. Summers from the presidency of Harvard University and discusses what Mr. Summers' action may indicate about the power afforded faculty members and whether an outspoken president can ever lead the renowned university. Wilson interviews individuals on both sides of the debate, contrasting the image of a brash and imperious leader running roughshod over a much-lauded faculty getting what he deserved with a tale of how a small group of professors, feeling threatened by the president's hard questions, conspired to force him out. A list of Summers' possible successors and a timeline of Summers' 5-year tenure as president is included.
