Technology Drives Career and Technical Education in High School Reform
Vail, Kathleen
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v72 n8 p4-11 Apr 2007
Today's career and tech programs blur the lines between college and career prep, undoing traditional high school tracking. The technology used in jobs now requires higher-level skills of those responsible for the work than ever before, and due to this fact and to changes in the way these programs are implemented, enrollment in the area of career and technical education has shot up in the past decade by 57%. After highlighting some of the changes in the way career and technical education is conducted and perceived, this article presents four types of career and technical education commonly found in today's schools: (1) part-time technical high schools; (2) full-time technical high schools; (3) charter technical high schools; and (4) career academies.
