The Big Fixes Now Needed for "No Child Left Behind"
Stover, Del
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v72 n7 p4-11 Mar 2007
The underlying principles of No Child Left Behind (NCLB)--the demand for high standards, greater accountability, and the focus on long-overlooked student populations--are good. NCLB has done well for public education. Still, tens of thousands of educators nationwide are hoping that this year's reauthorization debate in Congress will lead to changes in the law. This article discusses the changes needed to make NCLB more effective and the political resistance the proponents of these changes are likely to face.
