Dyna Soars: Low Torque Measurement Dynamometer
Dolph, Darrel A.
Tech Directions, v63 n6 p20-22 Jan 2004
Students in the Electronics Engineering Technology program at Pennsylvania College of Technology designed and built a computerized dynamometer platform for testing dc brushless motors. As the capstone experience for EET-320, Measurement and Tests course, students were divided into teams of four and were given three weeks to complete the project. The students are provided with a test stand and two DMC1124A10003 dc brushless motors from Hurst Manufacturing--one motor to test and the other motor to use as the load. The minimum project requirements called for using a PC, LabVIEW 6.1, PCI-MIO-16E-1 DAQ card, SCXI-1000, SCXI-1121, SCXI-1124, one thermocouple, one GPIB instrument, and displaying and printing a graph showing torque vs. motor speed for the motor under test. Students gained invaluable experience working on this project. They faced a variety of technical problems, including power distribution, electrical noise, algorithm development, and limited I/O capacity, as well as timing and control issues. Details about the dynamometer are discussed. (Contains 4 figures and 4 photos.)
