The Four Elements of Trust
Vodicka, Devin
Principal Leadership, v7 n3 p27-30 Nov 2006
Research and experience indicate that trust may be among the most essential elements in developing a true learning community. Teachers' trust in the principal has been shown to correspond to positive performance and more trusting relationships with other stakeholders. In this article, the author discusses the four elements of trust: (1) consistency; (2) compassion; (3) communication; and (4) competency. Each of these four factors is necessary in a trusting relationship but insufficient in isolation. The four factors together develop trust. Although it may sound like an oversimplification, the author believes that developing trust is the most central duty for school leaders if they are interested in positively influencing their learning community.
