Beyond the School: Getting Community Members Involved
Hindman, Jennifer L.; Brown, William M.; Rogers, Catherine S.
Principal Leadership, v5 n8 p36-39 Apr 2005
Citizen involvement in education has increased in the last two decades as schools have sought to involve their communities in school matters. An increasing number of schools have formed partnerships with citizens and local businesses to provide volunteers, funding, and expertise to benefit students. Developing partnerships with local citizens and businesses allows community members to develop a sense of ownership in their schools. When developing strategies to increase community involvement, schools should identify potential barriers related to communication, time and resources, and attitudes that could make local residents reluctant to become involved and use a variety of strategies to overcome them.
