Hiring savvy teachers requires interviewers to assess more than candidates' willingness to do the job, love of students, and ability to fit into the climate of the school. Beyond these qualities, an important question remains and that is if the candidates have the assessment skills to be effective in this new age of test scores, accountability, and data usage to improve learning. Assessment skills are part of the bigger picture of teacher training in the new teacher education programs that are striving to supply schools with quality teachers. So how can school leaders identify the candidates who possess the assessment knowledge and skills that are associated with increased learning outcomes? One method is to include a variety of questions about assessments within the interview.
