Your Greatest Asset
Ramey, Kyle
Principal Leadership, v6 n9 p31-35 May 2006
It is not people in general, but the right people who are your most important asset. By hiring more of the right people, organizations create a culture of superstars and keenly focused professionals with a common drive. The wrong people will usually become uncomfortable in this environment because of their lack of performance, and these folks will either step up to the challenge and make dramatic improvements or they will choose to leave. Every year, education leaders have the opportunity not only to hire the right people but also to get them in the right seats. In this article, the author describes a hiring routine he developed by borrowing and modifying questions and techniques from veteran administrators and business professionals. He discusses interview questions which he finds helpful in finding the right person for the job and describes what he is looking for in the candidate's answer. He concludes that there is no perfect interviewing technique or ideal hiring method, but that with a well-conceived plan mistakes are minimized and administrators can indeed make the right decisions.
