Ready or Not: Meeting Paraprofessional Criteria

Much attention has been paid to the "highly qualified" requirements for teachers in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), but the paraprofessional provisions have stayed out of the spotlight. With the deadline for compliance approaching, it is important to turn everyone's attention to these provisions to see who they affect, what new requirements they establish, what barriers schools and districts may encounter, and what strategies may be used to address them. By June 2006, paraprofessionals who have instructional duties in a Title I program are required to meet provisions mandated by No Child Left Behind. This article presents NCLB requirements that paraprofessionals are required to meet: (1) hold an associate's degree or higher; (2) complete at least two years of education in an institution of higher education; or (3) pass a competency exam. This article also discusses how principals can support efforts to comply with NCLB regulations, as well as the consequences of noncompliance.
