The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) sets standards for the teaching profession and certifies teachers who meet those standards. Currently there are NBPTS-developed standards for 27 fields, such as age range (e.g., early childhood, adolescence, young adulthood) and content area (e.g., English/language arts, middle generalist, or science). With so many responsibilities already, principals might ask why they should make it a priority to encourage teachers to be candidates. The author answers that supporting certification by the NBPTS is one way to improve the quality of their staff and school, and enhances principals' understanding of teaching and learning. This article discusses important information about National Board certification from a principal and a teacher who have been through the process, and explains that candidates for NBPTS certification can be supported in a number of ways, including: (1) raising awareness of the program; (2) identifying and recruiting possible candidates; (3) setting up a support system; (4) letting candidates keep their focus; (5) encouraging "banking" of scores; and (6) celebrating success.
