Getting a Second Chance
Davidow, Julia A.
Principal Leadership, v6 n5 p34-38 Jan 2006
In this article, the author discusses the Student in Good Standing Contract (SGS), a program designed to help the students at Ocean Township High School in Monmouth County, New Jersey renew themselves, rebuild their self-confidence, and commit to learning. Once a student is identified as violating the school disciplinary policy and is suspended from participating in activities and athletics, the student is offered a contract that outlines eight areas in which the student must demonstrate renewal. The student then gathers evidence of good character, including disciplinary and academic records and testimony from teachers and classmates, to present to a review committee. The committee assesses the evidence and offers other interventions or reinstates the student into the school community. The school has found that its SGS program builds character, supports personal and family values, nurtures the students' self-confidence, and helps students change their behavior, rather than simply punishing them for their poor choices.
