Master teachers are the ones who stand out as individuals. They make the classroom hum with their independence, self-reliance, and individuality. They possess a personal center: an enviable sense of self that may not be keyed to the latest themes, fads, and procedures, but that works to bring community and learning to those they teach. Principals want to hold on to these teachers. Their classrooms are orderly and disciplined, they relate well to parents and colleagues, and they see to it that students learn. These teachers are role models for other teachers, and they supply a needed stream of optimism in the school community. They contribute very little to principal anxiety and require little, if any, of the principal's time and energy. Master teachers are in danger of becoming an attrition statistic, because they are being overwhelmed by "experts" who tell them what to do. In this article, the author presents shepherding guides that offer opportunity and encouragement without excessive direction to "all" teachers. (Contains 3 resources.)
