Putting Words into Action
Amoroso, Paul
Principal Leadership, v5 n9 p27-29 May 2005
The tradition of a sink-or-swim philosophy for new teachers was and had been common practice in Lakeside Middle School in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey for decades. However, the school's principal has worked to reverse the tradition of a sink-or-swim philosophy for new teachers. He, together with the administrative team, has created the New Teacher Training Program, a system that matches their commitment to support new staff members by aiding in their professional development and heightening their commitment to their organization. This program provides orientation, professional learning, and long-term support for novice teachers through the following initiatives: (1) an informal summer luncheon; (2) a mentor assigned to each new teacher; (3) a training program that lasts throughout much of the year; and (4) a feedback and evaluation system. This article provides an overview of how the program works and shares the valuable lessons learned during its first year.
