The Power of Professional Preparation
Boone, Elizabeth; Hartzman, Marlene; Mero, Dianne

Respect. Responsibility. Resourcefulness. These three simple words embody the culture and mission of Duncan Polytechnical High School in Fresno, California. The terms are everywhere: They are painted on corridor walls, printed on posters mounted in every room, emblazoned on surfaces in the cafeteria, and easily verbalized by all of the students and faculty members. The way of life they represent is extensively written about in the school's published materials, discussed in classrooms and hallways, and referenced during most student activities. Most important, the words are reflected in the students' attitude and demeanor and in the daily behavior the adults model. Students are expected to live and breathe these words: Respect yourself and all others. Take responsibility for your actions and your school. Be resourceful and use your talents to the highest degree. Yet, regardless of the exertion required to achieve these ideals, Duncan is a school of choice. This article describes what Duncan offers its students--the opportunity to prepare for college and a career in a personalized environment that supports them, challenges them academically, and expects them to succeed.
