Take Me out to the Ballgame
Hollingsworth, Jan Carter
Exceptional Parent, v37 n6 p40-42 Jun 2007
Challenger Baseball, a Division of Little League International, was established in 1989 with the first team forming in Bristol, Connecticut. Today, over 35,000 children with disabilities who are between the ages of 5 and 18 participate. Teams are formed according to abilities, rather than chronological age, and can include as many as 15 to 20 players. The three levels of play include: Tee-Ball, Coach-Pitch, or Player-Pitch. Teams welcome boys and girls. This article highlights the Challenger program which gives kids with disabilities the opportunity to experience firsthand the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and the myriad of other sensory wonders that accompany a day at the ball field.
