Offer Flexible Learning Opportunities to Encourage Re-entry and Completion
Hyslop, Alisha
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers (J3), v82 n3 p33-35 Mar 2007
Several years ago, leaders at Vanguard-Sentinel Career Centers, located in northwestern Ohio, began looking at the issue of student motivation. They were concerned that some students, even in their career-based programs, were falling through the cracks. For a variety of reasons, these students were not successful in the traditional high school environment. After observing a program near Dayton, Ohio, that allowed students who had dropped out of high school to attend classes in a refurbished warehouse nearby, a concept began to grow. Three years ago, Vanguard-Sentinel opened "The Gateway Program," modeling the concepts of an off-site location and flexible hours. The Vanguard-Sentinel program partners with Terra Community College to allow students to attend courses on the college campus. Through networking and the sharing of best practices, a similar program, known as "Gateway to Success" opened at the Great Oaks Institute of Technology, in partnership with the University of Cincinnati's Clermont College, in 2006. This article describes how these two programs offer flexible opportunities to encourage reentry and completion.
