An Algebra Content Upgrading Course for In-Service Mathematics Teacher: A Singapore Experience

This paper describes a content upgrading course on Secondary School Algebra which was planned and conducted for in-service mathematics teachers who are trained to teach mathematics at lower secondary level (ages 13 to 14). In order to be an effective mathematics teacher, one needs to know a great deal of mathematical knowledge on top of good pedagogy. This course aims to "upgrade" the mathematics content of these teachers in order to enable them to have a holistic view of the entire Algebra syllabus in the secondary school mathematics curriculum. The details of the content, exercises and the assessments for the participants are discussed in this paper. (Contains 15 tables and 1 figure.)
