KIPP Academy Lynn
Coats, Stephanie
Journal of Education, v185 n2 p11-18 2004
In this article, the author profiles KIPP Academy Lynn Charter School in Lynn, Massachusetts. The school's mission is to "create an environment where the students of Lynn will develop the academic skills, intellectual habits and character traits necessary to maximize their potential in high school, college and the world beyond." KIPP Academy Lynn Charter School is modeled upon the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP) in the South Bronx, New York, and Houston, Texas. Both open-enrollment schools are the highest performing public middle schools in their school districts, as measured by standardized test scores; and both serve students who arrive performing below grade level. There are four essential elements in KIPP's record of success: High Quality Instruction, Emphasis on Character Development, Focus on Results, and More Time on Task. The school's curriculum is designed to push students to build on the rudiments, as they explore increasingly more complex and abstract topics. In addition, teachers at KIPP Academy Lynn use the interests and cultural backgrounds of their students to plan instruction.
