Shell Creek Summers
Seier, Mark; Goedeken, Suzy
Science Teacher, v72 n4 p37-39 Apr 2005
In 2002 Shell Creek Watershed Improvement Group turned to the Newman Grove Public Schools' science department to help educate the public on water quality in the watershed and to establish a monitoring system that would be used to improve surface and groundwater quality in the creek's watershed. Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality provided funding for startup equipment and chemicals for seven high school students that volunteered to accept the task during their 2002 summer vacations in what has now become an ongoing project. During this project students have gained skills in water quality monitoring processes and data analysis. Students have learned through teacher instruction, demonstrations, and equipment manuals how to use D-nets, colorimeters, and various types of chemical analysis procedures. Students have also become very proficient at developing computer slide presentations to communicate their results to the three involved community organizations. (Contains 2 figures.)
