Sense of Wonder Science
Potter, Gregory; Ritz, William
Science and Children, v44 n2 p40-42 Oct 2006
The California State University, Long Beach has received a grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services in 1995 to carry out a project called "A Head Start on Science." The project's goals were inspired from a book written by world-renowned biologist Rachel Carson entitled "The Sense of Wonder." Carson promoted that science should be built on a child's inherent curiosity about his or her everyday world. In this article, the authors describe how the project has allowed teachers and children to explore the world together. The authors also describe a "nature bracelets" activity, a favorite activity that embodies the goals of the project's focus on instilling a "sense of wonder" in the learning of science.
