Making the Most of Alert Notification Systems: Eleven Tips for Using Emergency Communication Solutions in Your District
Riley, Sheila
Technology & Learning, v27 n7 p26 Feb 2007
Districts are finding that alert notification systems that deliver automated phone messages are an effective way to reach parents and employees. Implementing the technology is one thing and getting the most out of it is another. This article presents the Districts' goal to get in touch with parents and employees in emergency situations. Andy Berning and Randy Taylor offer their strategies for using emergency communication solutions in their respective District. These strategies are the following: (1) Be clear about what the District's trying to accomplish--set up goals; (2) Put one person in charge--responsible for the content of calls and system operation; (3) Carefully select which numbers to use; (4) Set up categories of message recipients; (5) Put thought and effort into training; (6) Don't overuse the system; (7) Monitor outgoing messages if necessary; (8) Keep passwords secure; (9) Have the system notify parents of absences at random times; (10) Evaluate use; and (11) Look at possible future uses of the system.
