It Takes an "'Ohana" to Educate Young Adolescents in a Multilingual, Multicultural Society
Deering, Paul D.
Middle School Journal (J3), v37 n2 p15-21 Nov 2005
This article discusses the different problems of public school systems in Hawaii. Hawaii's schools face many challenges. They have one of the highest rates of private school attendance, in the U.S. at about 33%, while schools in the single, state-wide public school district, the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE), are seriously under-funded. Hawaii annually ranks in the bottom quarter of all U.S. states on cost-adjusted teacher pay and per-student funding. In this article, the author talks about achieving cultural fit via guidance, curriculum and family, and multiculturalism in Hawaii. (Contains 1 figure and 1 note.)
