Young People's Aggressive Behavior in the Context of the Social Situation
Drozdov, A. Iu.
Russian Education and Society, v47 n1 p55-62 Jan 2005
Aggressive behavior by young people is one of the most urgent social problems. Rising violent crime among adolescents is being observed over the entire post-Soviet space. Scientists have singled out a number of groups of factors causing an individual to engage in aggressive behavior--biological, genetic, and individual psychological characteristics; the specific character of one's upbringing; the influence of the subculture; the role of the mass media; and so on. To determine the connection between different types of social situations that tend to provoke aggression and individual personality characteristics, in 2001 the author carried out a social-psychological survey. A total of 166 people (with an equal number of men and women) between the ages of fourteen and twenty, living in the city of Chernigov, were surveyed. They were students in the upper grades of secondary school, college students at the pedagogical university, and people who had served in the military. They were given a questionnaire describing a number of situations and types of aggressive actions. The results of the survey make it possible to conclude that situational factors play an essential role in the actualization of young people's aggressive behavior. (Contains 2 tables.)
