The Motivational Preferences of College Applicants and Students
Vishtak, Ol'ga V.
Russian Education and Society, v46 n8 p66-73 Aug 2004
Higher education has to accomplish a most vital task, that of shaping the personalities of future specialists who, in their school years, are to master the knowledge, abilities, and skills that are laid out in the state educational standards governing the particular specialty. Experience has shown that to accomplish this task it is essential that college departments have a clear understanding of the considerations that motivate college applicants to enroll in an institution of higher learning; the level of their preparation in general education school; how developed their abilities and skills are for doing work on their own; the range of their interests, favorite activities, and abilities; their traits of character; and the state of their health--in other words, how well fitted they are to meet the demands of their future profession. In the present article, the author shares the experience of studies to ascertain the structure of college students' motivations, experience that was gained by the department of Control and Information Science in Technical Systems (CITS) in the Balakovo Institute of Technology and Control at Saratov State Technical University. These studies have been carried out since 1999. The study has been carried out using the questionnaire survey method. The results are entered "each year" into the data base of the Diagnostic subsystem of the information control system of the department of CITS. (Contains 2 tables.)
