The Development of Human Potential in Russia: Education and Generational Changes
Russian Education and Society, v46 n8 p6-53 Aug 2004
Fundamental changes have taken place in Russian education in the past ten to fifteen years. These changes have affected all aspects of education, from forms of ownership and the mechanisms and level of financing to the content and technologies of education. For this reason, an analysis of education and the tendencies of its development from the standpoint of the generational approach today makes it essential to compare Soviet education and contemporary Russian education. In the present article, education is looked at in a number of its aspects: (1) How the level of the population's education changes from one generation to another, the structure of education and educational trajectories; (2) The transformation of attitudes toward education and the demands on education on the part of youngsters in school and/or their parents; and (3) The extent to which the system of education is prepared to meet the new requirements of society. (Contains 11 tables and 16 notes.)
