Churkina, Liudmila
Russian Education and Society, v46 n3 p73-91 Mar 2004
In this article, the author describes a pedagogical council meeting that was convened to discuss "The Shaping of the General Culture of School Students." The purpose of this council was to focus the teachers' attention on the question of whether they were successfully demonstrating a combination of high professionalism, intellectuality, and general culture. The author explains during the council meeting that in order for teachers to demonstrate professionalism, they should understand that it starts with trivial things such as addressing youngsters with respect. In addition, the teachers are required to not only know clearly their school subject but also know their student and know the student's inner world. The author also explains how important it is for teachers to know the parents of their students. Teachers should know the characteristics of the youngsters' home life, the relations within the family, and how the parents react to the success or failure of their children in school.
