The Secrets to Increasing Females in Technology
Shanahan, Betty
Technology Teacher, v66 n2 p22-24 Oct 2006
The assumption that technology and engineering is for boys is reinforced by the reality of the severe under-representation of women as both practitioners and teachers of engineering and technology. The secret to increasing the number of females in technology is not to "fix" the girls but to make the technology classroom and profession more appealing to and welcoming of girls. Rather than trying to replicate the approaches and interests of the small number of girls successful in technology to a larger group, the secret is to make the environment one that the larger group wishes to join. This article suggests some straightforward approaches that can motivate girls to take up engineering- and science-related interests.
