Self-Evaluated Competencies of School Nurses in Korea
Yoo, Il Young; Yoo, Moon Sook; Lee, Gyu Young
Journal of School Health, v74 n4 p144-146 Apr 2004
Preparing school nurses to meet adolescent health needs remains a challenging task requiring planned curricula at schools of nursing as well as postgraduate educational experiences and programs. The World Health Organization (WHO) has focused on adolescent health and development for years by training competent nurses. One result of this activity by WHO was development of a framework for integrating adolescent health and development concepts into preservice professional curricula and suggested evaluation of current undergraduate nursing curricula to assess the competence of nurses. The survey reported in this document assessed the competence of school nurses regarding adolescent health and development, and identified areas that need continuing education to improve competence. The project had two specific objectives: (1) to assess competence of school nurses regarding adolescent health and development based on core competencies developed at the WHO Cairo Technical Conference in 2001; and (2) to identify areas of further education for school nurses in Korea.
