Creating Identity-Safe Spaces on College Campuses for Muslim Students
Nasir, Na'Ilah Suad; Al-Amin, Jasiyah
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v38 n2 p22-27 Mar-Apr 2006
The current national political context has brought Islam (as both a practice and an identity) into the media forefront. The events of 9/11 and the resulting war in Iraq have sparked renewed interest in the religion of Islam and the life of Muslims. This context has made the discussion undertaken in this article of the issues faced by Muslim college students at once more difficult and more important. In this brief commentary, the authors explore some issues that arise for Muslim students on college campuses, drawing both on their personal experiences and discussions and interviews with Muslim students from a wide range of college campuses. An effort was made to include Muslims from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and to include both men and women. This article describes how students experience college campuses as spaces where they negotiate their Muslim identities. The authors link the issues these students raise to how people experience identities in social contexts more generally and to students' experience of the university as a learning context. They also present several potential prescriptions for practice that college administrators might consider in making their campuses more welcoming learning and social spaces for Muslim students.
