The Principal's Role in Attracting, Retaining, and Developing New Teachers: Three Strategies for Collaboration and Support
Watkins, Paul
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v79 n2 p83-87 Nov-Dec 2005
Effective teaching is not intuitive. Whether new teachers come to the classroom as a second career or directly from a teacher education program, they all share the need for support and belonging. Establishing a learning community that values the ideas and experiences of all its members will sustain new teachers through their early years. Without a strong learning community that supports new teachers, the principal faces attrition rates that jeopardize student achievement and curriculum continuity. In this article, the author presents three strategies that may help lessen teacher turnover. These strategies include mentoring, action research, and study groups. The author also suggests that principals should consider some important responsibilities for making this process a success.
