Promoting Student Self-Regulation in Learning
Bodrova, Elena; Leong, Deborah J.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v71 n2 p54-57 Oct 2005
This paper focuses on what teachers need to know to develop self-regulation in young children and what is and what is not successful in promoting it. Self-regulation is a deep, internal mechanism that underlies mindful, intentional, and thoughtful behaviors of children. Self-regulated children can delay gratification and suppress their impulses long enough to think ahead to the possible consequences of their action, or to consider alternative actions that would be more appropriate. Here, the authors describe the two facets of self-regulation, the ability to both inhibit and enact. In their work with preschool and kindergarten teachers, they found that it is possible to positively influence self-regulation even when the amount of time children spend in school is very short. Some helpful suggestions in promoting self-regulation are presented.
