Including Exceptional Students in Your Instrumental Music Program

This article describes the method and adaptations used by the author in including students with special needs in an instrumental music program. To ensure success in the program, the author shares the method he uses to include exceptional students and enumerates some possible adaptations. There are certainly other methods and modifications that will prove successful with diverse learners, based on individual needs and circumstances. One can provide a typical experience for exceptional students by developing a plan in consultation with colleagues and parents that realistically accounts for individual abilities and that can be modified according to student progress. In this way, all students have a chance to succeed in an instrumental music program.
